November 22, 2022 Board of Education Meeting

Board of Education Meeting – November 22, 2022

Highlights from the meeting

The recording of the full meeting is available here.

Last night’s BOE meeting started with a presentation by Dr. Miller and Ms. Peter on Advanced Placement courses and scores. The number of students taking the AP courses and tests have decreased since the high point in 2020, but that is a trend that is seen across the state and nation. There is an expectation that it will start to trend back up now that schools, including Verona are getting back to pre-Covid procedures.

As part of the presentation, awards were given to students who achieved at certain levels on the AP tests.

AP Scholar – this is earned by students who achieve a score of 3 or higher on 3 AP exams. Verona had 40 AP Scholars.

AP Scholar with Honors – this is earned by students who achieve an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams and achieve a score of 3 or higher on 4 or more exams. Verona had 9 AP Scholars with Honors.

AP Scholar with Distinction – this is earned by students who achieve an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a 3 or higher on 5 or more exams. Verona had 15 AP Scholars with Distinction.

Superintendents Report –

The School Safety Plans are being completed. The District Safety Committee is meeting and planning new and refresher training for district staff. The Memorandum of Understanding between the School District and the Verona Police Department has been signed.

The Climate Survey Committee will be working with Rutgers University to conduct a climate survey of the Verona Schools. There will be the opportunity for parental participation in the survey.

The Superintendent will be hosting a series of meet and greets to meet with Verona parents and members of the community.

The building mapping project is moving forward. The new maps by Alpha is giving us a nice starting point.

There was also a discussion about active shooter drills and lock down drills.

Board Secretary Report

The Auditors will be presenting at the next BOE meeting.

Facilities Report

We are still looking for a buyer for the old 54 passenger bus.

There is a new work order program which will streamline all work orders from teachers and staff.

Fiscal year 2024 budget preparation will start in January 2023 with principal and department head creating their proposed budgets.

There were no public comments or questions.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! The next BOE meeting is December 13th at 7pm in the high school learning commons. It will be the last meeting for Sara Drappi and Jim Day.
